Oh, the carrots aren't vampires, they're just evil. I don't remember why, but it was something I found in looking up folk curses of the Mediterranean (ctrl-F the carrots, you will see they are malicious).

Alas, there used to be a fragment of documentary about the tarantula cult on YouTube, but no longer. Weird stuff, though.
