Most of my reading this month was electronic, making it a challenge photographically. I’ve been keeping up a decent pace with my reading but my acquisitions have done likewise.

12. Play Unsafe by Graham Walmsley. A short non-fiction book on tabletop roleplaying. Pretty basic stuff around consent, communication and theatre-sports improvisation.

DNF – The Meeting of Waters by Caisel Mor. Over the years I’ve tried several times to read this book but it just isn’t for me. I found the style pompous and felt more time needed to be put into introducing the characters.

Online Reading
Pockets by Amal El-Mohtar. When Nadia starts finding strange items in her pockets, she thinks at first that a friend must be playing a prank on her. A gorgeously uplifting speculative fiction story about friendship and uncertainty.
In the Future there will be Birds by Shauna O’Meara. Alanna joins an activist raid on a lab rumoured to be genetically manipulating birds. This is a near-future sci-fi that asks some interesting questions about attitudes towards genetic engineering.
The Court of Five Thrones, Ch 13- 31 by Pia Foxhall. Yeah, I’ve always been bad at watching TV shows. I prefer to wait until they come out on DVD and then watch it in one go. Apparently I’m the same with serialised stories. Except now I’m all caught up and have to wait for new chapters (Piiiaaaa…. nooo!). Which is unbearable because of spoilers. I just want to slap Gwyn and Augus upside the head. It has been super awesome to see Gwyn take command, however (especially with the Nain Rouge). I’ve also enjoyed seeing the normalisation of an asexual character in the story, especially since it is the sort of story that may well squick many asexual readers. Once again, a reminder that this is an original fantasy m/m erotica and not suitable for all audiences.

Date: 2015-03-06 03:25 am (UTC)I'm a lot more brutal about DNFs than I used to be. I used to want to finish everything and now I'm like 'nope life's too short!' How do you think you push yourself with stories in general? Like, do you finish more than you reasonably want to finish - as in, do you permit more books in through the net than sometimes you'd like? I know you read a lot, so I was wondering how often when you finish something you find yourself thinking 'yeah I really didn't enjoy that as much as I was kind of hoping to.'

Date: 2015-03-07 04:55 am (UTC)I was actually planning to write a blog post about DNFs! It takes a lot to make me DNF. I wonder if that's partly a professional hazard, since I've often had to edit stuff I'm not really all that interested in and so I can put up with a lot. I've definitely read plenty of stuff I've been a bit 'meh' about. This year I have noticed my reading patterns are changing pretty drastically in certain areas (paper vs ebook being one), thanks to the blog and reviewing. I'll be interested to see whether DNFs end up being one of those areas.
