My wonderful sister took me out to the Botanic Gardens last week and handed me her spare DSLR camera. This caused me no end of delight. I think my smartphone camera is wonderful, but there are some things it just can't do. Chief among these (in my opinion) is bird photography.

I found getting the point of focus right on the DSLR rather a challenge, both in auto and in manual. And I was thrown in the deep end somewhat, as wrens are damn tricky to catch on camera. Fortunately, I managed a few decent shots.

The Superb Blue Fairy Wrens were out in full force, with at least one male in his spectacular breeding colours.

This wren butt made me laugh.

One of the females.

The wrens weren't the only ones around. We also caught a few New Holland Honeyeaters.

I like the first one with the flowers and also the lady fairy wren, for that she is so delicate-looking on those legs...the honeyeater shots look like something out of a professional Australian bird book; stunningly alien to me. You have both a good eye and a quick clicking finger in the mix there, I think.
