Tidbinbilla Part 1 - Mammals

In accordance with our tradition, Sahaquiel and I headed out to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve on New Year's Day. This was the first year I was carrying a DSLR camera, which allowed me to take photos of the fauna instead of just the flora. I ended up with so many photos that I have to share them with you in batches.




Not sure whether these are both juveniles. The one at the back still seems kind of small, even for an Eastern Grey.



This critter was having a fine time sunbaking across the path. They hopped off once we got too close.



Camouflage is a thing.


On our way out, we stopped in at the koala enclosure. There were three inside today and one of them was particularly active.

Lovely! We did not get to see koalas, but we saw some Eastern Grays in the wild...if further away.

Yeah, the koalas aren't quite as common in the wild or as easy to spot. However, the Eastern Greys are pretty common, depending on the part of the country you're visiting.

I like the stealth kangaroo. What do koalas do if it gets super hot, or is all that fluff so insulative it keeps them the same temperature all the time and it doesn't matter?

I'm not entirely sure. I'd think the fluff must be at least partially insulative. On the other hand, I know that there are less fluffy varieties of koala. I might have to do some research.

I would like to be as relaxed as that koala.

Me too. Though I must say the koala in all the photos except the second was the most active of the three and even jumped from one branch to another while we watched.

But generally koalas spend most of their life either sleeping or eating.

It's probably not so much relaxed, as stoned.

Plus eucalyptus leaves are super low in nutrition, so low energy lifestyle is kinda required.

I adore 'Roos, especially the Grey ones.

the big Reds can be a bit scary muscley though.

The Reds are definitely a bit scary. The Greys I can deal with.

Re: the potential juveniles, she could be a very young mother too? I know they can start having offspring pretty early. But either way, SO ADORABLE.

As for the kangaroos, the thought had crossed my mind that she could be a young mother. After all, the Greys can stay kind of small. But she seems so tiny!
